We have prepared the following information about Jacksonville Liposuction Surgery by Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery to give you a better idea of what is involved with the liposuction surgery procedure, how to prepare for liposuction surgery, and the results that patients should expect. Please be away however that this information is in no way a substitute for the consultations that you will have with your surgeon prior to liposuction surgery.
What is Liposuction Surgery
Liposuction Surgery is a procedure used to remove unwanted fat from certain areas of the body to contour the body to a more pleasing, more healthy state. The procedure is performed by a skilled surgeon who inserts a wand like vacuum through various incisions depending on each procedure to vacuum out unwanted or excessive fat.The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and lasts between thirty minutes to four hours depending on the patient.
The most common technique is “tumescent liposuction” and is performed using a diluted mixture of dilute local anesthetic and adrenaline. This solution referred to as "tumescent" fluid injected into the treated area through tiny access points which helps to numb the treated area, control bleeding, and reacts with fat in order to ease the process of removal.
What to tell your Plastic Surgeon
Prior to your surgery, you will speak to your surgeon. Your surgeon will ask you a number of questions about medications you might currently be taking, vitamins or even herbs. This may not seem important but it is very important for your surgeon to know prior to your surgery.
As Liposuction Surgery is generally a cosmetic procedure, it is also important to discuss in great detail your desired result. This information combined with a close examination will allow your surgeon to fully explain the preferred procedure and what expectations you should have as a result of your surgery.
Preparing for Liposuction Surgery
The following points can help to shorten your recovery time, and decrease your chances of complications:
• Discontinue using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naprosyn (these medications act as blood thinners and could cause problems with blood clotting).
• Stop smoking for at least two weeks before and one week after surgery, as nicotine can impair circulation and healing.
• Don’t drink alcohol in excess before or after surgery.
• Drink several glasses of water, juice or an energy drink such as Gatorade leading up to and the night before surgery.
To make your recovery easier and more comfortable be sure to:
• Arrange for someone to take you home and take care of you for at least the first day.
• Fill your prescriptions and place them within easy reach of where you will be resting.
• Place plenty of pillows, a spare compression garment, and hand towels for drainage nearby.
After Liposuction Surgery
We will of course advise you and caution you about what to do and not do after your liposuction surgery, and what you should expect based on your particular procedure. However, in general you should expect bruising, swelling and the need to manage your pain as you recover. You may also notice some loss of sensation. This is normal as your nerves will begin to regenerate after surgery and return to normal. Swelling is also a factor after liposuction surgery and may last for a number of months before you completely recover. However, sever pain is not normal and in the event you experience sever pain after liposuction surgery, you should immediately alert you surgeon.
Everyone recovers differently and at a different pace. However patients can generally expect to, or make an effort to be up and walking the day after surgery. It is common in the first day or two after surgery for excess tumescent fluid and possibly a small amount of blood to drain from the small incisions that were created during your surgery. If course you will need to protect these small incisions to help promote healing and reduce scaring so your surgeon will advise you on how long to wait before showing.
Depending on your particular surgery you will need to take your time getting back to normal activities. You will be provided with special contouring garments designed to help shape your body as it heals. Excessive activities that involve jolting your body or strenuous activities should be avoided for up to six weeks. Your surgeon will advise you when and at what level you can safely return to your normal routines and activities based on your rate of recovery.
After patients completely recover from liposuction surgery which is usually around three months after the procedure, treated areas will be completely back to normal. Future weight gain is of course possible but will generally occur in areas other than previously treated areas of the body.
