Are Breast Implants Right for You?
12/15/2021
Breast implants are continually increasing in popularity. In fact, a new study documented in the New York Times shows that 296,000 augmentations were performed in 2010, which is a 2% increase from 2009. Breast implants continue to be ideal for those patients looking to have a fuller bust, feel better about their bodies, and create more confidence in their bodies. If you’re considering having breast implant surgery, it’s time to learn the basics of the procedure to see if it is right for you.
Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants
Currently, there are two main options for breast implants – silicone or saline breast implants. Both options have their own set of pros and cons that you will need to consider. Saline breast implants are considered safer because if they rupture, then the saline will dissolve naturally in the body. However, it is more likely that you will see ripples through the skin post-op with saline-based implants. Silicone implants are smoother and softer than saline implants. Our patients often prefer the natural feel that silicone has to offer versus saline breast implants. Moreover, silicone-gel implants are less likely to ripple than saline implants. One of the biggest disadvantages of silicone implants is the danger that they may present to your body should they erupt. The silicone gel may stay inside the implant shell or leak outside of the shell when it ruptures.
Breast implant surgery may be right for you if:
- You're over the age of 18
- You would like to have larger, fuller breasts
- Your breast size has shrunk due to weight loss or breastfeeding
