Does Liposuction Leave Scars?
12/15/2021
One of the most popular and frequently performed plastic surgery procedures today is liposuction, without a doubt, and it’s easy to see why. Liposuction is relatively affordable compared to other common procedures and comes with relatively low risk. It’s also the type of procedure that just about anyone can benefit from, as nearly all of us have fat deposits that we’d rather be without. However, many people are still concerned with factors such as scarring, even with a relatively non-invasive form of plastic surgery like liposuction. Let’s take a closer look at what liposuction as a procedure really entails and examine what you can expect as far as permanent scarring. Is It Possible to Scar From Liposuction? Yes, it is possible for there to be some scarring from any liposuction procedure. Liposuction incisions are usually minimal and often difficult to detect. Additionally, these incisions are very small. Scars resulting from liposuction will fall into one of two categories. The first type of scar is called dyschromia and will manifest as either a hyper-pigmented (dark) or hypo-pigmented (light) spot on the skin. Scars of this type are similar to the type of scars some people get from acne or blemishes, especially those who have darker skin tones. The other type of scar would be a true scar, which will look closer to the type of scar you’re probably used to. Liposuction scars are difficult to detect and over time they fade to such a high degree that they’re almost invisible. Today’s plastic surgeons also perform their procedures with the avoidance of scarring in mind, so you can rest assured that your incision will be strategically located and usually hard to detect.
