Machines that use radio waves or sound energy to tighten loose tissues have been around for a long time. You’ve all heard about these devices in the past, like Thermage™, TruSculpt™, and Ulthera™, but a new device, ThermiTight™ is now FDA-cleared to deliver Radiofrequency energy in a new way and really tighten the loose skin of the face and neck, arms, and abdomen. We can now achieve amazing results that were not possible before with heat energy delivered only to the surface of the skin.
What is ThermiTight™?
ThermiTight™ is a new FDA-approved device that uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deep layers of the skin from inside the body. Using a more controlled and carefully monitored delivery of energy right where it is needed most allows us to tighten the tissues underneath the skin. Because the heat is not delivered on top of the skin, there is much less discomfort for the patient, and superior results are achieved.
How does this work?
After a small volume of anesthetic solution is injected into the area to be treated, the tiny ThermiRF™ SmartTip™ thermistor probe is inserted under the skin. The surgeon gently moves the probe to heat the tissues in the treatment area safely. Skin safety is monitored with Thermal Image Guidance™ using a specialized camera. Most procedures take less than one hour and can be combined with other procedures or performed alone with the patient awake. After the procedure, a gentle wrap is applied and the patient may resume normal activities the next day.
Where can this be performed?
This procedure is done as an outpatient in our state-licensed surgery center. One of the most attractive features of this new device is that it can be used in multiple locations on the body to tighten areas that we were unable to treat before effectively. Now, with a minimally invasive procedure, we can shrink areas like the back of the arms, fatty chin, knees, neck, and lower abdomen that would have required a much larger procedure with more downtime. This device is even showing some excellent results with difficult to treat cellulite in the upper thighs.
How is the recovery?
Patients will experience some moderate discomfort after the numbing medicine wears off. They will have oral pain medicine to provide comfort for the first two days. After that, most will not require anything else. There will be some mild bruising and swelling that can last from 1-2 weeks after treatment. Patients will go home with gentle compression over the treated areas and can return to work and normal activities the next day. Results will be evident over 6 weeks to 3 months and will last years!
