What Is Sculptra?
Approved by the FDA in 2004, Sculptra is often used to treat lipoatrophy, also known as loss of facial volume. At Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery, our board-certified cosmetic surgeons highly recommend Sculptra as it is proven to give patients a youthful appearance. Sculptra in Jacksonville helps to replace lost collagen in the face and is a long-lasting non-surgical treatment, allowing patients to maintain their youthful appearance for up to two years.
The Bio-Stimulator: Building Your Own Collagen
Unlike other dermal fillers, which hide wrinkles by filling the skin, Sculptra’s role is to stimulate your body’s own collagen. Sculptra itself doesn’t technically “fill”; rather, it is a bio-stimulator that triggers the collagen matrix that forms your volume. Marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and volume loss in the temples, mid-face, cheeks, sub-cheeks can all be treated with Sculptra. In addition, it’s a very natural treatment because it uses the body’s own foundation to build up volume.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Sculptra?
If you’re in the Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach, or Ponte Vedra Beach, FL area and you’re considering Sculptra injections, you may be wondering if you’re a good candidate. The best patients for Sculptra are those who:
- Are over 18
- Are athletic with thin faces
- Are naturally thin with a lot of hollowing
- Are much older and have been requiring a lot of filler
- Have had a facelift but don’t want another procedure (and hollowing is present)
- Are not finding success with filler
- Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are not immunocompromised
- Do not have any skin outbreaks, redness, or rashes
- Are not prone to keloid formation
- Are not taking blood thinners, aspirin, other anti-inflammatories
What Happens During a Sculptra Treatment?
Immediately following a Sculptra injection, there will be some mild swelling and redness at the injection site. This will subside a few hours after the treatment. You will be able to resume your normal activities immediately, but exercise should be avoided for a few hours.
Sculptra is injected directly into the face and helps restore chin wrinkles, lines surrounding the mouth, and the deep lines between the nose and mouth. We use a cannula instead of a needle to administer Sculptra because it allows for better precision and control; less swelling and bruising, and fewer injections.
You will feel a small prick as the cannula inserts through the skin, but any pain or discomfort can be controlled with a topical anesthetic or numbing injection if desired. For the greatest results, the average patient is recommended to have 2-3 injections over a few months (1-2 vials every 8-10 weeks).
What Will My Downtime and Results Be Like?
Sculptra is administered during an in-office appointment that typically takes about 30 minutes. The injection treatment, including the dosage and injection location, is tailored during the procedure to fulfill your individual needs. The injection is given through a cannula to localized areas on the face.
After the injections, an easy aftercare procedure helps to ensure lasting effects. Results following Sculptra will become apparent gradually during the weeks after the treatment. It will take 8-12 weeks for your body to build up the collagen and bring back volume, and once this happens, the result is that the surface of the skin will appear younger and restored.
Sculptra is different from other fillers because the results usually last up to two years. It’s is the only long-lasting filler to improve the shape and look of the face, and the results appear gradually without a dramatic immediate change. After your series of Sculptra in Jacksonville, we recommend having another treatment once a year for maintenance.
“Best place to go to for all your cosmetic needs. The team are all amazing and I trust no one else! I live in Tampa and drove the distance because of how much I trust this group. I had so many concerns that I would even message my doctor directly and she would always reply back to me with her sincere answers and opinions. This is something that isn’t always done by others.”

Sculptra vs. Filler and Botox: Which Is Best for You?
Sculptra is the only filler that produces long-term gradual results. Injectable fillers help to decrease wrinkles by adding volume to certain facial structures, which creates a smooth result on the surface of the skin. Botox®, which temporarily freezes the underlying muscles, may offer a result that looks similar, but the approach is different. A skilled practitioner will be able to determine which treatment will achieve the best results for your specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How safe is Sculptra?
Sculptra is approved by the FDA and has a long history of safety worldwide since 1999. Sculptra uses poly-L-lactic acid, which the human body naturally produces. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used for general sutures for many years. Reported side effects include subtle pain, bruising, swelling or redness, bruising, and a few others. Bumps have sometimes occurred as noticeable when applying pressure to the injected area. Please consult our team if any of these side effects concern you.
What is the best age to get Sculptra?
The most common age to receive Sculptra® injections is between ages 30-55; however, it is also common for patients who are younger and older than this range to receive injections.
Can Sculptra be combined with other treatments?
Yes, Sculptra can complement other treatments like dermal fillers or Botox. It works best for overall volume restoration, while other treatments can enhance specific areas for fine lines or wrinkles. Combining treatments can lead to more comprehensive rejuvenation.
How long does Sculptra take to show results?
Sculptra stimulates collagen production over time, so results gradually become visible after a few weeks to months. Patients typically notice full results after 3 to 6 months.
Is Sculptra suitable for body contouring?
Yes, Sculptra is not only used for facial rejuvenation but can also be effective for enhancing areas like the buttocks, décolletage, and even knees by adding subtle volume and improving skin texture.
How many sessions of Sculptra will I need?
Most patients require a series of 2 to 4 sessions spaced several weeks apart to achieve optimal results. The exact number of sessions depends on individual goals and starting volume loss.
Does Sculptra help with skin elasticity?
Yes, Sculptra promotes collagen production, which helps improve skin elasticity and firmness over time, giving the treated area a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Can I exercise after receiving Sculptra injections?
It's best to avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours after the treatment. Gentle activities are fine, but limiting intense movement can help reduce swelling and bruising.
Does Sculptra feel different under the skin compared to other fillers?
Unlike traditional fillers, which create instant volume, Sculptra works gradually by stimulating collagen. The treated area may feel slightly firm for a few days after the procedure, but this subsides as collagen production begins.
How long do the results of Sculptra last?
Sculptra results can last up to two years or more. Since it stimulates your body's natural collagen, results tend to be longer-lasting compared to other fillers. Periodic maintenance treatments may be recommended to sustain results.
