Breast Reduction: Feel Good in Your Own Body

Breast reduction helps women by removing fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, perkier, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola (the skin surrounding the nipple). The goal is to give women smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body.

“Growing up, I’ve always had these heavy breasts (38DDD/F). I always had shortness of breath could never exercise how I wanted. I couldn’t wear cute tops. Bras were hella expensive. I was really insecure about my boobs. My boyfriend said he loved them, but it wasn’t about him. I decided to make a consultation with Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery. My doctor and his staff were absolutely amazing. I must say I feel amazing. My back is straightened. My mom says they look nice and perky. Growing up, I never knew what it felt like to have small boobs. My breast size is a full C, but after swelling goes down might be a B cup. They look amazing. I definitely recommend doing a breast reduction. Best decision ever.”

Breast Reduction Surgery Details

A breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility as an outpatient procedure. It typically takes about 3-4 hours to complete, depending on the method used and each patient’s unique case. There are multiple types of incisions that can be used for this plastic surgery procedure.

Your surgeon will determine the best type for you after assessing your breasts during your consultation. During breast reduction surgery, your surgeon’s experience and skill are essential. In addition to minimizing scarring, there will be a focus on maintaining a healthy blood supply to the nipple-areola complex. This is important because once the nipple and areola are re-positioned, blood vessels will work to re-establish blood flow to prevent discoloration of the nipple and loss of feeling.

Excess breast tissue is generally removed through a liposuction method, and loose skin will also be surgically removed.

Recovery

For the first several weeks, patients will be directed to wear a surgical bra or compression garment. Most patients are able to return to work within 1-2 weeks, and may begin exercising by 4-6 weeks. The visible results of a breast reduction will be immediate. It may take six months or longer for nipple sensitivity to return.

Results

The results following breast reduction surgery should remain the same as long as a significant amount of weight gain does not occur. The natural aging process and gravity will, over time, change the laxity of a woman’s breast, but the size should remain steady if there is not a pregnancy or weight gain that follows.

FAQ

Can the size of my areolas be reduced?

What is the average breast reduction size?

Can the size of my areolas be reduced?

One of the drawbacks to having excessively large breasts is an enlarged areola (the slightly darker area surrounding the nipple). Thankfully, breast reduction surgery corrects this. Since the incision occurs around the areola, it is a relatively simple technique to trim away the desired amount of areola and re-shape it into a smaller size so it looks proportional to the new breast size and shape.

What is the average breast reduction size?

This varies depending on the patient’s aesthetic and physical goals. After breast reduction surgery, it is common to go down a complete cup size, if not two.
