What Is Upneeq?

Upneeq is an FDA-approved prescription eye drop that temporarily lifts the upper eyelid muscles. This allows people suffering from acquired blepharoptosis to open their eyes wider and improve their facial appearance.

How Does Upneeq Work?

To use Upneeq for droopy eyelid treatment, you simply insert one drop of the liquid into each eye once per day. Upneeq’s active ingredient, an 0.1% oxymetazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution, causes the muscles in your upper eyelids to contract. That directly causes the eyelids to lift slightly, significantly reducing the effects of acquired blepharoptosis. After taking the drops, you’ll be temporarily able to open your eyes more comprehensively, and your face will look more youthful. Plus, your field of vision should expand.

  • Lifts droopy eyelids
  • It makes your face look more youthful and energetic

Are There Any Side Effects?

A small percentage of patients have experienced certain side effects from taking Upneeq, most of which are minor. Side effects of the treatment may include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye inflammation
  • Irritated eyes
  • Redness in the lining of the eye (conjunctival hyperemia)
  • Pain when inserting the eye drops
  • Headaches
  • Inflammation of the cornea

Upneeq can sometimes cause rebound redness, also known as rebound hyperemia. Rebound redness is a persistent redness of the eyes that can occur when your eyes become accustomed to redness-relieving eye drops. Although Upneeq is not prescribed to relieve redness, its active ingredient may still cause the condition. Contact your doctor if you experience this symptom while taking Upneeq.

Am I a Candidate for Upneeq?

If you’re dealing with acquired blepharoptosis and want to try a non-surgical treatment, you may be a good candidate for Upneeq. Before taking the medication, inform your doctor about health conditions and other drugs. Because Upneeq can affect your blood pressure and amine metabolism, it may interfere with these types of drugs:

  • Beta-blockers
  • Anti-hypertensive medications
  • Cardiac glycosides
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors

How Long Will It Take To See Results When Using Upneeq?

After inserting your Upneeq eye drops daily, your eyelids should be lifted noticeably higher within 15 minutes. However, the medication results are temporary; your eyelids will gradually settle back into their original position after six to eight hours.
