What is BOTOX®

BOTOX® is a simple, non-surgical technique that can temporarily smooth moderate-to-severe frown lines between the brows, forehead lines, lip lines, and crow’s feet at the eyes. At Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery, our highly skilled surgeons will use their experience and precision to adequately administer BOTOX® in Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville, & St. Augustine, giving patients a more wrinkle-free and youthful appearance.

What Does BOTOX® Treat?

  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • The chin
  • Smoker’s lines around the mouth
  • “Bunny lines” at the nose
  • Upper lip (the BOTOX® “lip flip”)

Candidates for BOTOX® in Jacksonville

If you’re in the Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach, or Ponte Vedra Beach, FL area and you’re interested in BOTOX® treatments, you may be an excellent candidate. Those who make great candidates for this treatment are those who:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Do not have a history of neuromuscular diseases
  • Do not have an allergy to the ingredients in Botox
  • Do not have a neurological condition
  • Do not have an active skin infection or condition
  • Have realistic expectations for what BOTOX can do

How Exactly Does BOTOX® Work?

BOTOX® has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use in the U.S. since 2002. When injected, it blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles that are causing wrinkles to form.

This makes the muscle temporarily weaken or become paralyzed. By weakening the muscles that are causing wrinkles to form, the wrinkles soften or go away altogether.

The BOTOX® Lip Flip

For patients who want lip enhancement, the BOTOX® lip flip is a great alternative to dermal fillers. In this treatment, BOTOX® is injected into the muscles over the upper lip, which causes the top lip to move slightly upward, “flip” out, and show more of its underside — thereby looking fuller and more attractive. The BOTOX® lip flip essentially makes a smile less gummy and the lips more shapely.

Before & After

BOTOX® Treatment Details

BOTOX® in Ponte Vedra Beach is administered in-office and typically takes about 15 minutes. Due to the fact that the depth, length, quantity, and location of wrinkles vary for each patient, the injection treatment itself — including the dosage and injection location — is tailored to each individual person.

You will be marked for the specific areas on the face that will be used as injection sites. The injection is given through a syringe to localized areas on the face. You will feel a small prick as the needle enters through the skin, but any pain or discomfort is controlled with a cold compress.

Recovery

Immediately following your BOTOX® treatment, you will have some mild swelling and redness at the injection sites. This will subside after a few hours. You will be able to resume your normal activities immediately, but exercise should be avoided for a few hours. It is also recommended that patients keep their heads elevated for the first 8-10 hours.

Results

Subtle results can be seen in 4-5 days following treatment, but don’t expect results to be final until two weeks.  About one week after treatment, you will notice an inability to fully move portions of your forehead. With limited movement, wrinkles will cease to appear. The result is skin that appears smoother and softer. It’s important to note that BOTOX® is not a permanent fix. Results will last for several months (and sometimes longer), but they will not last forever.

Qualified injectors will tell you there is good news and bad news when it comes to BOTOX®: the good news is, if you aren’t happy with your results, they will only last a few months. Likewise, the bad news is if you love your results — which most people do — the results will only last a few months. Regardless, many patients recognize that even the temporary results are worth feeling and looking younger.

Cost of BOTOX® Treatments

Botox prices vary depending on how much Botox is required to achieve your cosmetic goals. Each patient’s facial structure and aging process are different, and each patient has different needs. The number of units it takes to achieve the desired results and the number of areas that require treatment will factor into the price. The average cost of Botox typically ranges from $300-$600 per treatment.

How safe is Botox?

Botox is approved by the FDA and has a long, safe history. It is administered in over 75 countries and consistently ranks as the most popular cosmetic procedure in America. However, even with its popularity, Botox is still a drug. Therefore, it should only be administered by a qualified medical practitioner. Individuals who receive injections by someone inexperienced run the added risk of bruising, over-medicating, and ultimately, obtaining an undesirable result.

Are there any alternatives to Botox?

In 2009, Botox gained competition when Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) was developed, approved by the FDA, and made available to the general public. Both drugs are used to relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles and frown lines. Some practices lean toward Botox to address forehead lines while considering Dysport for crow’s feet. There has been much debate as to which drug is superior, as both have their advantages. Distinct differences can be discussed during your consultation.

Should I get Botox or dermal fillers?

Injectable fillers such as Restylane® and Juvéderm® help decrease wrinkles by adding volume to certain facial structures, which creates the appearance of smooth skin. Botox, which temporarily freezes the underlying muscle, offers a similar result with a different approach. A skilled practitioner will be able to determine if fillers or Botox would achieve the best results for your specific needs.

What is the best age to get Botox?

Individuals who wish to soften and decrease facial lines and wrinkles may be candidates for Botox. The most common age to receive Botox injections is between 30-55. However, it is also common for patients younger and older to receive injections. Patients in their 20s often get Botox as a preventative measure.
